Single Umbilical Artery (SUA)

So dear ladies, it seems that not many of you saw my update on my Harmony test post, but here goes again: at our private 12 week scan yesterday we were diagnosed with single umbilical artery (there should be two and one vein which there was one).

Our worries and heartache continue. This condition in isolation has excellent outcomes, not much different to normal 2 artery cord, however in small percentages it is associated with some chromosomal issues or congenital abnormalities.

So far, our baby looks fine, she managed to see everything on the US (hands, feet, 5 fingers on each hand, 5 toes on each foot, kidneys, spine, brain (butterfly shape), heart, stomach etc) all looked fine.

Apart from the artery in the cord.

If this is the only issue we'll encounter for the rest of the pregnancy, I'll count my lucky stars as it carries full capacity of nurturing a healthy baby until the full 40 weeks gestation, however if it is just a precursor of what's to come, then we may as well drop the idea of ever having a baby.

I don't have feelings at the moment - quite numb and at times terrified.

We'll see next week what the specialists at UCLH say.

Best of luck to all of you - I'm sure to most this will never cross their path, however, someone has to be that one.

Much love,

xx
