BA & BS!!!!

Arrived at the hospital for my induction at 9am and put on the MTV for monitoring at 9:30. Everything showed baby was fine and it picked up I was already contracting. The moved me to a delivery room at midday andi had lunch. Ctgwent back on again but baby kept moving so hard to track her and machine played up so no contractions were picked up and was told probably braxton hicks. (Lasting 30-40 seconds every 4-5 mins)

So at 1:20 they broke my waters (2cm dilated) and at 2pm they started the hormone drip. I coped without pain relief for a little but the contractions were coming thick and fast really soon so asked for gas and air by 3:30.

I remember feeling very drousey and the student midwife, who stayed with me pretty much the whole time from my waters going, told me to breath fresh air between contractions and I tried to tell them there wasn't a break between they were one on top of the other. They got a Dr in who authorised the drip to be turned down.

The next time I'm aware of was about 5:30 when I was desperate to push and they said i was 9.5cm dilated!! The urges to push were so strong they told me to go with it. Unfortunately push as i might, i was exhausted from such a quick progression that they had to use a ventous and I had an episiotomy and.....

Baby Isabelle Amelia arrived at 6:04 pm weighing 6lb 7oz! She is perfect!!

We had skin to skin and a little breast feed but the injection to bring out the placenta had not helped and it wouldn't come out. My mum had this with all 3 of her labours, as did her mum with all 3 of hers. As did I with our angel but avoided theatre by having it manually removed by speculum and tongs.

So by 8pm I was into theatre, with a spinal block to get it removed and sutured back up. We had a good laugh and a joke in theatre, was weird being in there aware and with it with no feeling below the waist. I was more frightened of that than the labour!

Out of there by 9:30pm and Mart met me in recovery with Isabelle. She had already done poos! Went to post natal ward and Mart stayed til 1:30 am before he was told to go home to sleep. I was devasted as I couldn't get out of bed with no feeling waist down, canulars in each arm and exhaustion. But couldn't sleep with a crying newborn to feed and cuddle all night so neither of us slept. Isabelle was on 3hourly OBS for blood sugar checks all night so I couldn't feed her until blood sugars had been taken. When she did feed she wouldn't open her mouth wide enough even with mW help so sucking on my nipples became agony, so I switched to hand expressing after each failed attemptto latch properly. Which is hard with canulars and wires all over the place.

A midwife mentioned going home thursday and I thought no way, I gotta get home so I got myself together, forced myself out of bed, had catheter taken out, and had a shower and breakfast by 9:30. Mart allowed back at 10,Am he took over for me to catch half hour sleep. Had a pelvic floor exercise class with the 3 other ladies on our ward, bathed her with midwife help, ate lunch, had breast feeding support worker help for a while. Paediatrician signed Isabelle off and was out the hospital by 4:30pm.

Isabelle doesn't like being put down so Mart stayed up with her in his ar!ms waking me for feeds playing her lullabies which I slept through entirely! Going to try swaddling her tonight and putting a breast pad at the other end of her Moses basket so she feels cuddled and still close by me.

She's is also having trouble latching on to the breast instead preferring just the nipple. So we try again each feed and I'm mostly hand expressing the colostrum into her mouth which she is taking very well and has slept well between today's feed. Ive managed to cook the dinner put the washing on and have a bath.

MW visited (too early to weigh and do certain checks apparently) and said she will get breast feed support worker to come by but that once milk comes in it will flow easier and she won't be sucking so hard, even if her latch isn't the best my nipples won't be so sore.

So that's my story. I finally made it. We are tired but so in love. I want to wrap her up in cotton wool and worry I will wake up from this dream to find it isn't real.

Thanks again for all your support. I will post pics later, off to try out the pram now. Xx
